MTV Movie Awards 2010

I aim to celebrate fashion through my blogging comentary, featuring what, in my opinion, are the best looks, the most stylish and inspirational. Sometimes, however, it's hard to be complementary and all too easy to be critical.

Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards saw more style shockers than I care to recall, with Katy Perry leading the way as a repeat offender. In order to save the best 'til last, I inevitably have to start with the worst...

Hmmm, I've seen transparent mesh 'decorated' with strategically placed crystals before. Britney Spears wore something strikingly similar in her Toxic video...word of advice to Katy Perry; take fashion tips from Britney and you will end up with a truly toxic look. Regarding the blue wig - words fail me.

It puzzles me as to why Christina Aguilera still insists on relentlessly championing the hair and make up of a 50s sex siren. It isn't new or surprising anymore, it's standard and what is expected from Xtina (cringe). The bandage style top with oversized chain straps is all a bit Jodie Marsh, and the bottom half weirdly reminds me of the body of a blackbird, all shiny feathered and oily looking. Far too try-hard and far too tacky when paired with a peroxide quiff and stripper heels.

I don't want to jump on the bandwagon and become yet another one of Kristen Stewart's very harsh critics, but when you are a star of cult classic movies, and have access to the world's greatest stylists, I think you should use them.

Whitney Port: Style File

Whoever said having your own personal style was all about loyally following one particular look or formula was wrong. I'm not sure that anybody has actually said this, but it's the general consensus, right? Stick to what suits, job done...Sure it's safe, but it's also a tad dull.

The 'Sienna effect' highlights my point exactly, as girls and women of all ages embraced the Boho trend season after season. By having such a definite style, and hardly ever straying from the skinny jeans or maxi skirt and gladiators combo, Sienna Miller's look was easily replicated. Yes, she did look great, but by 2008 we were all a little bored of Boho, no?

Whitney Port, on the other hand, likes to mix it up. Whether at work or play, her stylish mix of Californian cool and New York gloss never fail to inspire. Quirky combinations keep her look fresh, unexpected and formula free. The only common features appear to be her trade mark honey-hued locks and effortlessly long legs.

This week Cheryl Cole announced that her divorce proceedings were to go ahead. It seems after months of humiliating headlines, Cheryl can no longer 'fight for this love,' and who can blame her?

Everyone I know, well, about 95% of my friends (girls, guys and even gays) fancy Cheryl. Personally, she's not my style crush, but I know a lot of girls who would go for the full on WAG-over (like a make-over but with bigger hair and higher heels) given half the chance. Now, I love glamour and can appreciate her 'look,' however, being a student with limited funds and time, I feel that easy chic is simply more achieveable - think Alexa Chung or the Olsens, just with considerably less Chanel.

Personal prefernces aside, there's no denying her fashion credentials, Cheryl's a Vogue cover girl after all. As always Vogue set the president, spotted the trend, whatever, and since then she's appeared on the covers of Elle (Nov 09), Q (Feb 10) and more recently Harper's (June 10).

Over exposure's never a great thing and even though her music is a little overplayed to say the least, I like it. 'Fight For This Love' reminds me a my 21st birthday, it was the soundtrack to the night infact, and many a drunken dance was had to that song. I assume the memories of the aptly titled song are not so great for Cheryl, but at least her chart climbing success acts a big two finger salute to Ashley-cheating-Cole.

Earlier this week, publicist Max Clifford said, "As a single person, the potential is even greater, brighter and better for her than being married to a footballer who's unpopular with most people unless they're Chelsea fans."

SATC 2 World Premier

Last night the world premier of SATC 2 took place in New York, naturally. The red, or rather, blue carpet was awash with fabulous outfits, and it wasn't only SJP who stole the show...

Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis glowed in neon shades of highlighter lemon Valentino Couture and candy pink Jean Desses. Cynthia Nixton played safe in comparison, in black Carolina Herrera, whilst Kim Cattrall upped the glam factor in a shimmering Naeem Khan gown.

Whitney Port, one of my all time style icons, rocked up to the screening dressed to perfection. The flattering Moschino mini, red lips and elegant up-do was given a contemporary, funkier edge when teamed with caged ankle boots. Definitely the best dressed guest in my opinion. (More Whit wardrobe wonders to come...)

With only three days to go until the much anticipated sequel hits UK cinemas, SATC mania is in full swing as all of the weeklies run 'special' issues. I especially enjoyed this week's Stylist, a New York edition, filled cover to cover with SATC themed shoots and stories. Thankfully I managed to find a discarded issue on the train, it made my journey go much quicker and minimised the very likely possiblity that I fell asleep hunched over my handbag.

I Predict A Riot...

...as Topshop launch yet another one of their genious designer collaborations. Meadham Kirchoff's SS10 capsule collection lands in selected stores and online at http://www.topshop.com/ tomorrow. With a theme which I'm calling, 'Gothic Fairytale,' all antique rose lace, black mesh, jagged hems and more than a touch of transparency, the collection looks set to be just as popular as those previously designed by Christopher Kane and Marios Schwab.

On a chilly morning, way back in September, I was lucky enough to catch a sneaky peek of Meadham Kirchoff's SS10 mainline collection at London Fashion Week. Whilst sane people were sleeping peacefully at around 5.30am, my fellow intern and I stumbled out of our Addison Lee upon arrival at the venue. We arrived extremely early for the following show which we were working on, and watched bleary eyed from the side-lines as fashionista's flashed their tickets in anticipation. Shocking us out of our sleepy daze, a bellowing security guard demanded we stand by the bins, out of the way, as Anna Wintour was arriving any minute...diligently we ran, hid behind the garbage and held our noses...Oh the glamour! Anyway, I'm going off on a tangent, so here's a few of my favourites...

According to the Topshop blog, "This collection epitomises exactly what the Meadham Kirchhoff label has become loved for - incredibly beautiful, yet understated pieces that you won't find anywhere else!"

I need to go to Selfridges tomorrow to buy a friend's birthday present, so it would be silly not to go and have a look for myself seeing as I'll be passing. Purely for research purposes, however...but then I do need a new dress for that birthday party.

Belles of the Ball

Last night, whilst the rest of us prepared for the working week ahead, in our pyjamas with a cup of tea perhaps, the fashion elite slipped into their couture and cracked open the Cristal for the annual Costume Institute Gala. Co-hosted by Anna Wintour (who wore SS08 Chanel couture btw) and held at Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the glittering event gave the brightest style-stars yet another chance to shine. And my ten best dressed dolls are (in no particular order, because that would just be too hard)...

Jessica Szohr's caramel complexion carried off this nude silk tulle and black lace gown to perfection. Long, lean limbs were a key feature for both Gossip Girls, as Jessica's halterneck Atelier Versace number showcased her arms in the same way Blake's dress accentuated her 'look-at-me' legs. Sapphire blue Marchesa ensured Blake Lively sparkled amongst a sea of neutral tones.

Since nude is the new black, for SS10 at least, it was hardly surpising that a few celebs opted for this on-trend theme. Gwen Stefani paired a whispy, champagne sheath dress from her L.A.M.B. line with the usual dramatic red lips and smoky eyes. Contrastingly, Sarah Jessica Parker took an altogether more natural approach, styling her Halston gown (yes, another one!) with perfectly polished skin and a Carrie-style corsage...lovely!

Proenza Schouler catapulted Chloe Sevigny even further up the style charts, with this teal tutu dress. Amazing, with understated hair and make-up and chunky shoes by the same label.

Zoe Saldana appeared elegant and sophisticated in figure a hugging Calvin Klein creation. Proving less is most definitely more, accessories were kept to a minimum with nothing more than an oversized cuff and mirrored clutch. Although, more was, well, more, in the case in Jennifer Lopez who chose to work old school Hollywood glamour in icey blue Zuhair Murad with similarly stunning results.

Next up...best dressed couples!

Marking their first public appearance together since Jude's affair with the nanny (oh, and not forgetting having a baby with an unknown 'model') this was the occassion for Sienna to dress to impress like never before. The plunging neckline and graduated hem of her Emilio Pucci dress ensured Sienna looked quirky but classic, and although I hate to say this, she did have the best accessory of the night! No need to look so smug, Jude...

Diane Kruger and Josh Hartnet were another impecably dressed duo. Proving frou-frou frills, embellishment and glitz aren't the only way to achieve glamour, Kruger's Calvin Klein floor-sweeper is one of my firm favourites. Clean lines and crisp white appear modern and polished amongst fussier silhouetes.

And finally, although not the best look of the night, Gisele proved that supermodels really do look good in a bin liner (a shredded, Alexander Wang bin liner.)

I Heart SATC

With just over three weeks to go, the anticipation is building. Having watched the trailer too many times to mention, it's clear that the second Sex and the City fashion-feast is going to be just as fabulous as the first! I expect Carrie to wear a hell of a lot of Halston...with SJP recently having been appointed as the brand's creative director, it's a PR opportunity too good to miss. The trailer itself is a lesson in arabian chic; shimmering turbans, embellished hareem pants and shades of delicious, desert-hued nudes, all bang on-trend of course.

And then there's Mr. Big, arguably even more dreamy than the clothes. Some of my friends strongly disagree with me here, screaming "Don't you remember what happened last time?" or "He's such a *#@$!!!" My reasoning is, that if they lived happily ever after we'd be bored, right? Anyway, Aidan's back for all the traditional romantics out there, so there's something for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I do love Aidan, but Big has undoubtedly always been my fave (Carrie and I are so similar, ha!). Burger was boring, the Russian was just too old, Aidan too nice (there is such a thing!) but Big is just right. Take a look at these amazing pics and just try and deny it!
